Ron Volesky aims to be first Indian on state Supreme Court

Ron Volesky, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, wants to be the first American Indian on the South Dakota Supreme Court.

Volesky, an attorney and former state lawmaker, has submitted an application for an open seat on the court. He will be interviewed June 20, The Mitchell Daily Republic reported.

“There’s never been a Native American serve as a justice on the South Dakota Supreme Court,” Volesky told the paper. “After 122 years of statehood, this could be a historic time for race relations in South Dakota.”
