City to welcome Chickasaw Nation for 175th birthday party

The Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma will be the guest of honor as the city of Hernando, Mississippi, celebrates its 175th birthday.

Hernando was founded just as the tribe was forced to move to present-day Oklahoma. Mayor Chip Johnson told The Memphis Commercial Appeal that "we can't help what our ancestors did" but he said the city "is a community that's known for being diverse and welcoming to all."

Lt. Gov. Jefferson Keel will be presented with a key to the city during the July 3 celebration.
