Chumash Tribe wants to discuss land-into-trust bid with county

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians wants to discuss its land-into-trust bid with Santa Barbara County but a supervisor says it's too early in the process.

The tribe doesn't plan on submitting an application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Instead the tribe hopes to gain Congressional approval to acquire 1,400 acres in trust.

Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-California) has said he won't consider the idea without local support. The tribe is trying to meet with the Santa Barbara County chief executive but supervisor Doreen Farr thinks the tribe should make an "appointment" just like any other person.

"I’m just saying that if a talk with the CEO is going to happen, it (the issue) needs to come to the board. I don’t see spending staff time talking about it unless the tribe is successful in taking it (the land) into fee-to-trust,” Farr told The Santa Maria Times.
