Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe sues DOI for approval of wind farm

The Aquinnnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is suing the Obama administration for approving a controversial wind farm on Martha's Vineyard.

The tribe says Cape Wind will harm Nantucket Sound, where its members have harvested for food for centuries. The tribe is worried about the impact on sacred and archaeological sites in the sound, which once was dry land.

"The tribe depends on Nantucket Sound for food, jobs, spiritual ceremonies, and cultural continuity, and the Sound is essential to the Tribe's religious ceremonies and traditional religious practices," the tribe says in the lawsuit, Courthouse News Service reported.

The lawsuit alleges the Interior Department and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement have violated the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act.
