Richard Gomez: Chumash Tribe raises funds for the community

"Next week, 144 golfers will converge on the Alisal River Course in Solvang to tee up for the annual Chumash Golf Classic tournament, in which we expect to raise nearly $100,000 for local charities.

Since its inception in 2004, the Chumash Golf Classic has raised more than a half-million dollars for local nonprofit organizations and community groups. The tournament, which is hosted and organized by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in collaboration with the Chumash Casino Resort, has become one of the most popular events in the region.

The Chumash Golf Classic draws golfers from throughout the state who all gather to golf in one of the most beautiful settings in the state, socialize with tribal members and casino management and, of course, raise money for a great cause. Or, in this case, three great causes.

Each year the tribe selects organizations to benefit from the proceeds of the tournament. We seek out organizations that make a difference in the community and also share the same level of community commitment that we do."
