Editorial: White House promising more help for tribal colleges

"South Dakota has a strong and fascinating Native American history.

We need to ensure a rich future, too. One where we learn from the mistakes of our country and state and take pride in our Native American community.

The recent pledge from the White House to improve participation and completion rates at tribal colleges is a good thing. Members of the White House Initiative of Tribal Colleges and Universities met with five area college presidents recently at Oglala Lakota College in Kyle. They said the Obama administration is committed to helping Native American families and students succeed by supporting post-secondary education.

To meet Obama's college completion goal, South Dakota's tribal higher education institutions will need to increase their number of graduates from 241 a year to 465 by 2020."
