Excavation at site where Crow Tribe was forced to cede land

The Montana Department of Transportation has been excavating the site where leaders of the Crow Tribe were forced to cede land in 1880.

The tribe was camped out at the site when federal agents arrived with an agreement. It called on the tribe to move to a much smaller reservation.

“It’s obviously an important site,” Tim McCleary, a professor of anthropology at Little Big Horn College, told The New York Times. “But feelings are mixed.”

The state uncovered artifacts at the site in preparation for a road rebuilding project. The tribe is being consulted about the future of the site.
