Editorial: Province working to protect a site of Blackfoot history

'The Alberta government is to be congratulated for acquiring 1,000 hectares of land near Milk River and adding it to Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park, a protected area 100 kilometres southeast of Lethbridge since 1977.

The parcel, dominated by hoodoos, will expand the existing 1,700-hectare park, which has been nominated for designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its ancient sandstone carvings and paintings that are relics of the Blackfoot tribe.

If the designation is approved, Writing-On-Stone would join Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Dinosaur Provincial Park and Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park on the list of world heritage sites in the province."
