Cherokee Nation sees increase in turnout for second election

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma saw an increase in turnout for its second principal chief election.

A total of 8,787 votes were cast on Saturday, up from about 8,000 in the June election. More than 1,100 were cast during early voting, an increase of about 100, The Tulsa World reported.

The tally is likely to increase because Freedmen descendants will be able to cast ballots on two more dates. The tribe agreed to reinstate the Freedmen as part of a settlement with the descendants.

Final results of the race between Chad Smith, who was the incumbent, and Bill John Baker, a tribal councilor, won't be known until October 8 at the earliest.

Joe Crittenden, who was elected deputy chief, is serving as acting chief until the winner of the race is declared.
