Sentence reduced for man who was convicted of Aquash murder

Arlo Looking Cloud, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, has had his sentence reduced for murdering American Indian Movement activist Anna Mae Pictou Aquash.

Looking Cloud, 58, was sentenced to life in prison for Aquash's murder in December 1975. But his punishment has been cut down to 20 years, the Associated Press reported.

The reason for the reduction isn't clear because most of the documents are filed under seal in federal court. It's possible he was rewarded for testifying against John Graham, who was convicted in state court for Aquash's death.

Aquash, who was Mi'kmaq from Canada, was killed on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Her body wasn't found until February 1976.
