Menominee Nation restores hunting rights to descendants

Members of the Menominee Nation of Wisconsin voted to restore hunting, fishing and gathering rights for descendants.

In January, the tribal council passed an ordinance that limited hunting to enrolled members, who must possess at least one-fourth Menominee blood. Descendants became upset and pushed for a referendum that passed by a vote of 1,110 to 734.

"It was one of the largest voter turnouts that the Menominee Election Commission can remember," Chairman Randal Chevalier told The Shawano Leader. "There were many people that were passionate on both sides of the issue."

Descendants must possess at least one-eighth Menominee blood.
