Los Coyotes Band can remove military training facility

The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians of California will be able to evict a non-Indian operated military training center on the reservation.

The tribe's former chairwoman signed a lease and a lease extension with the Eagle Rock Training Center in March 2010. But the agreement -- which purported to waive the tribe's sovereign immunity -- was never approved by the full council.

Current Chairman Shane Chapparosa said the lease was invalid and began eviction proceedings against Eagle Rock. The company filed a lawsuit in federal court but Judge William Q. Hayes refused to grant a temporary restraining order that would have stopped the eviction.

The center has been used for military training exercises.
