Editorial: Taking a step toward reconciliation for Kansas tribes

"As a U.S. senator, Sam Brownback led efforts at the federal level to officially apologize to Native Americans for the U.S. government’s “ill-conceived policies” and acts of violence against them.

So it was most appropriate that Brownback, now governor, didn’t let the state’s 150th anniversary year go by without signing a proclamation apologizing on behalf of Kansas for the forced relocation and mistreatment experienced by tribes. Leaders of the Kickapoo Tribe, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, Iowa Tribe, Sac and Fox Nation, and Kaw Nation participated in the ceremony last week in Topeka."
