Bill would address liquor problems in Whiteclay border town

A bill in the Nebraska Legislature would help address liquor problems in the border town of Whiteclay.

LB 829 allows local governments to request an alcohol impact zone in Whiteclay. That could help address public drunkenness, loitering, crime and other issues.

The liquor industry opposes the bill, saying it gives too much control to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission to determine whether to approve an alcohol impact zone.

Whiteclay sits a few miles from the border of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Four liquor stores there sold five millions cans of beer in 2010, according to the Associated Press.
