Reservation voters file lawsuit over lack of election services

Members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe who live in Shannon County, South Dakota, have filed a lawsuit in federal court, contesting the lack of election services on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Shannon County contracts with Fall River County for some election services. That means tribal members have to travel long distances to participate in elections, according to the lawsuit.

Tribal members are also limited in their ability to participate in early voting, the lawsuit states. Shannon County has only agreed to offer twelve days total of early voting, compared to 46 days for other counties.

The lawsuit names the state of South Dakota and some county officials as defendants.
