Program promotes traditional values among Navajo families

A free program is helping families from the Navajo Nation restore traditional values into their lives.

Family Roots and Wings is funded by a grant from the Administration of Native Americans. It's an extension of the Navajo Healthy Marriages Opportunities Project, which focused on marriages among Navajo couples.

"We want to give people a sense of their roots," Tom Chee, the coordinator of the program's fatherhood initiative, told The Farmington Daily Times. "The idea is to really validate the perspective native families have. Native families have their own strengths and they can pass on some of that to the communities."

About 20 to 30 people, plus their children, participate in the program's six-week courses.
