BIA budget requests more money for newly recognized tribes

The Department of the Interior Fiscal Year 2013 Budget includes $320,000 for newly recognized tribes, an increase from current levels.

Rep. Tim Bishop (D-New York) said $160,000 from the account will go to the Shinnecock Nation. The tribe was the most recent to gain federal recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs process.

“Congressman Bishop has been a steadfast advocate for the rights and respect the Shinnecock Nation deserves, and we thank him once again for his help in securing the same type of funding for our community that other newly-recognized Tribal Nations have received,” Randy King, the chairman of the tribe's board of trustees, said in a press release.
