Kevin Abourezk: Indian students lagging in graduation rate

"Judi Morgan gaiashkibos knows Native students face many obstacles when it comes to achieving academic success.

Too many Native students don't have parents who are high school graduates and, as a result, don't have good role models for academic achievement, said the director of the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs. Regardless of the reasons, education leaders and parents need to get more involved in improving Native student performance, gaiashkibos said.

"Schools are not having high enough expectations of students and students of color," she said.

A new report published recently by the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education shows that Native high school students continue to lag behind other students in graduating. The report also offered data that hasn't been reported before regarding student achievement and failure by ethnicity and gender."
