Sauk-Suiattle Tribe claims immunity in employment lawsuit

The Sauk-Suiattle Tribe of Washington is raising a sovereign immunity defense in a lawsuit filed by eight former employees.

The tribe also says its constitution only protects tribal members. All of the fired employees are non-Indian and they say they are victims of discrimination.

The employees were among 11 who were fired by the tribal council in June 2011. They filed suit in tribal court, alleging violations of the tribal constitution and the tribal employee handbook.
