Walter Echo-Hawk, an attorney and member of the Pawnee Nation, spoke at the 40th annual Symposium on the American Indian in Oklahoma last week.
Echo-Hawk wrote “In the Courts of the Conqueror: The 10 Worst Indian Law Cases Ever Decided." Negative decisions that affect Indian Country are still being used today, he said.
“These cases are still the law,” Echo-Hawk said, The Cherokee Phoenix reported. “They’re still being cited and relied upon today by the Supreme Court to decide Indian cases whereas the other cases involving other races have been overturned.”
The symposium took place at Northeastern State University.
