FBI won't reopen investigation into Oglala Sioux deaths

The FBI said it won't reopen investigations into the deaths of 57 people on the Pine Ridge Reservation unless new information emerges, the Associated Press reported.

In 2000, the FBI released the so-called death list that attempted to explain why certain cases dating back to the 1970s weren't prosecuted. Leaders of the Oglala Sioux Tribe feel the report is insufficient and have cited additional cases since 2000 that they want further investigated.

"The conclusions that they issued for each name, each unsolved murder, were pretty sparse and limited and without additional information or additional public knowledge besides a couple sentences, that's supposed to clear up the taking of an individual?" attorney Lisa Shellenberger told the AP.

Tribal leaders plan to meet with U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson of South Dakota to discuss their concerns.
