School barred from returning remains to Kumeyaay Nation

A federal judge has barred the University of California from repatriating ancestral remains to the Kumeyaay Nation.

The temporary restraining order is in effect until May 11, Science Insider reported. It was requested by three professors who claim the remains, which date back 9,000 years, aren't connected to the Kumeyaay people.

The Kumeyaay Cultural Repatriation Committee has filed its own lawsuit against the university, seeking the remains under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act
