American Indian and Alaska Native population grows to 6.3M

The American Indian and Alaska Native population grew to an estimated 6.3 million in 2011 the U.S. Census Bureau report today.

The figure represented an increase of 2.1 percent from 2010, when the last official count of the nation's population took place. The figure includes people who claim more than once race.

Looking at the people who claimed American Indian or Alaska Native alone, the population was 3.8 million.

California had the largest number of American Indians and Alaska Natives of any state in 2011, with an estimated population of 1,050,000. This figure includes people who claim more than once race.

Oklahoma ranked a distant second, with an estimated population of 505,000. Again, this figure includes people who claim more than once race.

Going by percentage, Alaska had the largest percentage of American Indians and Alaska Natives of any state in 2011, with 19.6 percent, according to the Census Bureau. New Mexico ranked second.
