Mexican government promises to protect sacred Huichol places

The Mexican government said it will protect an area sacred to the Huichol Tribe.

The tribe has been fighting a proposed mine at Wirikuta, a mountain they consider to be the portal to the world. The area is home to Cerro del Quemado, a mountain that's considered the birthplace of the sun.

A Canadian company, First Majestic Silver, planned to drill mining shafts inside both mountains. But First Majestic is giving up its mining concessions and the Mexican government says it won't grant new permits in the area.
