Voters in California asked to approve increase in cigarette taxes

Voters in California are being asked to approve an increase in tobacco taxes.

Proposition 29 increases the tax on a pack of cigarettes by $1. The average price for a pack is $5.71, The New York Times reported.

The tobacco industry has spent $47 million in opposition to the proposition amid polls that show a majority of voters support the increase. The vote takes place tomorrow.

If approved, the proposition will raise taxes on other tobacco products, in addition to the $1 hike on pack of cigarettes.
