Standing Rock Sioux drug charges being handled in three courts

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and two federal courts are handling a drug trafficking case on the reservation.

As a result of Operation Prairie Thunder, 17 people have been arrested and charged with trafficking marijuana, cocaine and prescription drugs. The tribe is prosecuting five people in its court.

But the reservation straddles North Dakota and South Dakota. So the remaining defendants are being tried in the federal courts in both states.

"Cooperation like this means better law enforcement, better prosecutions and safer communities," Timothy Purdon, the U.S. Attorney for North Dakota, said in a press release.
