Three women making run for chief of Assembly of First Nations

Three Native women are attempting to break into the "old boys club" at the Assembly of First Nations, APTN reports.

No woman has ever been elected as chief since AFN was founded more than 40 years ago. Only four women have ever campaigned for the spot but that's changing this year.

Joan Jack of the Bear River First Nation in Manitoba, Ellen Gabriel of the Kanesatake Mohawk First Nation in Quebec, and Pam Palmater of the Eel River Bar First Nation in New Brunswick recently declared their candidacies for AFN national chief. They all say it's time for a woman to represent the First Nations.

Shawn Atleo of the Ahousaht First Nation in British Columbia currently serves as AFN chief. He is seeking re-election.

The election takes place July 18.
