Carri Jones makes history as first woman to run Leech Lake Band

Carri Jones made history as the first woman to be elected chair of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in Minnesota.

Jones defeated incumbent chair Arthur “Archie” LaRose by just five votes. “It’s time for new leadership,” she told The Bemidji Pioneer.

At 32, Jones is also the youngest person to lead the tribe. She said she wants to improve the tribe's finances.
