Investigation in closure of three public schools on Navajo Nation

The Obama administration is investigating the closure of three public schools on the New Mexico portion of the Navajo Nation.

The Gallup McKinley County School District closed the three middle schools in order to save money. But Navajo parents say they weren't consulted as required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

“These closures/consolidations are alleged to be discriminatory to Native American students in that it treats Native American students differently than white students,” Erica Austin, the chief regional attorney for the Office of Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education, said in a letter to Navajo parent Sonlatsa Jim-Martin.
