The Republican-led
House voted
239 to 5 on Wednesday to repeal the
Affordable Care Act, which includes the
Indian Health Care
Improvement Act.
Every Republican voted in favor of
H.R.
6079, the Repeal of Obamacare Act.
Included was
Rep. Tom Cole (R-Oklahoma), a member of the
Chickasaw Nation, and several other Republicans with significant Indian populations in their districts.
Five Democrats also voted to repeal. They included
Rep. Jim Matheson (D-Utah), whose district covers the
Ute Tribe, and
Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-North Carolina), who represents the
Eastern Band of Cherokee
Indians.
The vote marks the 33rd time that Republicans in the House have taken action against the landmark law. Repeal, however, is highly unlikely in the
Senate.
The
U.S. Supreme Court has upheld nearly every single provision of the law, including the IHCIA and other provisions that benefit tribes and individual Indians.
