Man killed in shootout with Jicarilla Apache police was fugitive

A man killed in a shootout with police officers from the Jicarilla Apache Nation of New Mexico was fugitive Rex Michael Sherwood.

Sherwood, 48, was known to tribal police after he allegedly shot at them last week. He was found dead in a gas station after a second incident with police on Sunday morning.

The shooting will be investigated to determine if it was justified. State police were also involved.
