Salish and Kootenai group eyes bigger share of trust settlement

A group called the People's Voice wants the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana to share all of a $150 million trust settlement with members.

The tribe plans to distribute half of the settlement on a per capita basis. That amounts to $10,000 for each of the 7,800 members.

People's Voice says that's not enough. A full payout would give $19,000 to each member.

"These people need it. They don't have no housing. I know a lady who has no water and she's living in her mobile home. I see people not even have underground electricity," group spokesperson Carlita Gonzalez told KPAX-TV.
