Participants in the
Santa Fe Indian
Market in New Mexico won't face tax issues at this year's event.
Last year, the city and the state claimed that hundreds of artists -- many of whom live in Indian Country -- owed taxes on the sale of goods during the popular event.
But the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, the organizer of the market, says tax issues won't prevent any exhibitors from showing this year.
"[L]last year was pretty stressful [but] we’ve done every possible thing to comply as early as possible," John Torres-Nez, SWAIA’s deputy director, told The Santa Fe New Mexican.
In March, SWAIA submitted the names of this year's participants to the state in order to clear up any taxation or reporting issues before the market, which takes place August 18-19.
