Squaxin Island Tribe hosts over 100 Canoe Journey participants

The Squaxin Island Tribe of Washington is hosting more than 100 Canoe Journey participants.

The canoes started making their entrance at Squaxin Island on Sunday. They represent dozens of First Nations in Canada and tribes from the Pacific Northwest in the U.S.

“We’re here to try to save our people,” said Gene Sampson, a skipper from the Hoh Tribe told The Olympian. “Once the youth learn their culture, they have a choice on how to live their lives.”

The Squaxin Island celebration runs through August 5.
