Kansas failed to consult tribes about Medicaid waiver request

The state of Kansas resubmitted its Medicaid waiver after failing to consult with tribes about proposed changes.

The application was originally submitted to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in April. But no one from the state addressed how the request would affect the Haskell Health Center and the White Cloud Health Station.

"Through further talks with tribal leaders, our updated application now includes presumptive enrollment and an opt-out feature for American Indians and Alaska Natives," Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer told The Topeka Capital-Journal in a statement.

The state of New Mexico also failed to consult tribes before submitting a waiver request, drawing angry responses from tribes.
