Pawnee Nation debates uses for $4.4M trust fund settlement

Members of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma met on Saturday to discuss a $4.4 million trust fund settlement.

Some pushed for a per capita payment, The Native American Times reported. But no decision was made.

“Our people shouldn’t have to beg for this money,” elder Bea Realrider said at the meeting, the Times reported. “It’s a small amount that won’t necessarily go that far, but we shouldn’t have to beg or tell our life stories to justify getting a few extra dollars. It’s our money and we want it now.”

The tribe has about 3,500 members.
