University in Michigan brings back Indian logo after 21 years

Eastern Michigan University has revived its Indian head logo, some 21 years after eliminating its "Hurons" mascot.

The school dropped the Hurons name in 1991 and is now known as the Eagles. But the EMU Marching Band is wearing uniforms that feature the old Indian head logo.

"I don't like native people being used as mascots in any situation," American Indian Services Director Fay Givens told The Detroit News in response.

The Wyandotte Nation doesn't object to the name, Chief Billy Friend said.

The Wyandotte and Huron descend from the same historic tribe.
