Alaska Natives hold rally for subsistence hunting, fishing rights

About 200 Alaska Natives attended a rally on Wednesday to call attention to their subsistence hunting and fishing rights.

Alaska Natives rely on hunting and fishing to feed their families and their communities. But the state has been restricting their rights, speakers said.

"Hunting and fishing is a God-given and spiritual right that cannot be denied. It is not negotiable," said Randy Mayo of Stevens Village, The Alaska Dispatch reported.

Subsistence is expected to be hot topic at the annual Alaska Federation of Natives convention, which begins today in Anchorage.
