Audit released of American Indian Cultural Center in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma State Auditor & Inspector released its report on the unfinished American Indian Cultural Center and Museum in Oklahoma City.

The report said the AICCM board in 2004 selected the most expensive plan for the facility despite not having raised anywhere near the money to build it. The $136.1 million "Vision Plan" was picked over the $85.3 million “Preferred Plan" even though only the museum only had $5 million at the time, according to the audit

Another $18.7 million was spent on a wide range of consultants because board members weren't experienced in museum development, the audit stated. “The project has existed in some form for eighteen years, during which time more than $97 million in state funding has been used for its purpose,” Auditor Gary Jones said.

The museum still needs $80 million. Blake Wade, the executive director of the Native American Cultural and Educational Authority, said private donors have agreed to donate $40 million, contingent on a state match of $40 million.

"I will never ask for another dollar" if state lawmakers approve the match, Wade told The Oklahoman.

Gov. Mary Fallin (R) requested the audit to satisfy concerns from lawmakers. She still supports the museum.

"The governor continues to feel that a half built facility on prime location that taxpayers are still paying for is a wasted opportunity to enhance tourism and economic development. The state needs to look at all possible ways to complete it," her office said in a press release.
