Rep. Darrell Issa introduces Violence Against Indian Women Act

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-California) introduced H.R.6625, the Violence Against Indian Women Act of 2012, on Monday.

The bill allows participating tribes to exercise jurisdiction over non-Indians who commit domestic violence offenses in Indian Country. The provisions are similar to those in S.1925, the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act that passed the Senate.

The House passed a version of VAWA that did not include the tribal jurisdiction provisions. The differences have yet to be resolved as the 112th Congress winds down.

H.R.6625 was referred to the House Judiciary Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee
