Michelle Fernandes: Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's traditions

"As elections for the Wampanoag Tribal Council approach in February, it may be a good time to talk about who we are as a community of people still keeping alive the culture and the historic traditions of our ancestors.

Most importantly, perhaps, we are a spiritual people with a strong reverence for all life and a deep appreciation for nature. We value all of nature's life-sustaining gifts — from the fish in the waters of our lakes, streams and ocean, to the plants and animals of the woodlands. We know that all have a role in the circle of life. They all are sacred to us.

It is more difficult in today's world to have the same intertwined relationship with nature as we once enjoyed, but as individuals, our concern for the environment has grown from these ancient, and still strong, roots. We continue to feel that we are stewards of nature. As nature gives to us, we must give back and protect it. This is for the benefit of tribal members who live here, and also for all of us who love Cape Cod and hope to keep it as special as it is."
