Bill allows Wyoming tribal police to enforce state traffic laws

A bill in the Wyoming Legislature allows tribal police officers to enforce state traffic laws on the Wind River Reservation.

Tribal officers can stop non-Indians but must call in another law enforcement agency to cite them. House Bill 27 ensures there won't be any jurisdictional loopholes.

'The grant of authority is intended to increase the number of law enforcement officers available to quickly and effectively respond to traffic violations, including driving under the influence of alcohol," the bill states.

Wyoming is home to the Eastern Shoshone Tribe and the Northern Arapaho Tribe.
