Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Charles Head dies at 63

Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Charles Head was killed in a car accident on Wednesday. He was 63.

Head's vehicle ran head-on into a semi truck. He died at the scene.

“Words cannot express how saddened we are at the passing of Secretary of State Charles Head. Charles has been a dear friend of mine for many, many years. My heart goes out to his family and many loved ones, including his wife Frances, his children and grandchildren” Chief Bill John Baker said in a press release. “Charles was a Cherokee statesman and ambassador for all of Indian Country."

Head, a Vietnam veteran, represented the tribe in dealings with the state, local and federal governments. He often testified on Capitol Hill about matters affecting the tribe and Indian Country.
