Editorial: Slain Chitamacha Tribe officer helped keep us safe

"It’s a tragic reminder of the danger law enforcement personnel face every day, but also a good reminder how we have heroes among us, who take jobs as emergency responders trying to keep us safe from harm.

Sgt. Rick Riggenbach, 52, with the Chitamacha Tribal Police Department was killed Saturday, after being shot as he responded to a call. Some reports said he was responding to a call about a fire, others said there had been reports that a man was seen walking down the road carrying a shotgun and a gasoline can.

Whatever the initial report, Sgt. Riggenbach was shot and killed as he responded. In addition, two St. Mary Parish Sheriff Office deputies were wounded as they also responded, deputies Jason Javier and Matthew Strickland."
