Montana bill authorizes year-round hunting season of bison

A bill in the Montana Legislature would authorize a year-round hunting season for bison.

Sen. John Brenden (R) is sponsoring Senate Bill 143. He wants the state to have an "zero tolerance" policy towards bison that wander out of Yellowstone National Park.

"You can take the worst rancher and put him in charge of Yellowstone Park and it would be the best-managed because he’d manage for numbers," Brenden told the Senate Fish and Game committee, The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported.

The bill would bar the relocation of any bison within the state. That would appear to prevent the National Park Service from transferring any bison to tribes.

Another bill would allow landowners to kill bison that enter their property.
