Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation defends land-into-trust application

The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation said officials in Yolo County, California, broke off negotiations regarding its land-into-trust application.

The tribe negotiated in "good faith" for nearly two years, a spokesperson said. But the county ended talks last month.

"Yocha Dehe has had a long collaborative relationship with the county and, from the outset, had hoped for the county's support for the trust application, even though it is not required," spokesperson Greg Larsen told The Woodlands Daily Democrat.

The tribe has asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to place more than 850 acres in trust. The land will be used for housing, education, infrastructure and other purposes.

The BIA has issued a finding of no significant impact on the acquisition. The county is asking for a more detailed environmental analysis.
