AIM marks 40th anniversary of occupation at Wounded Knee

Leaders and supporters of the American Indian Movement will be on the Pine Ridge Reservation today to mark the 40th anniversary of the occupation of Wounded Knee.

AIM took over the tiny village on February 27, 1973. The occupation lasted 71 days, until May 8, when the Nixon administration promised to look into treaty rights claims and other issues.

AIM co-founder Dennis Banks will be among those on the reservation. He will pay special tribute to the late Russell Means, another AIM leader who was at Wounded Knee. Means died last October at the age of 72.
