Editorial: Navajo Nation and state must cooperate on highway

The Arizona Daily Sun urges the Navajo Nation and the Arizona Department of Transportation to work together to address road conditions on the reservation:
Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly predicts eight months.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says it doesn't have a timetable.

But what does seem clear is that the break in Highway 89 south of Page won't be fixed anytime soon. And that means the trip between Flagstaff and Page will take at least an extra hour each way.

It's been a week since 150 feet of pavement buckled 25 miles south of Page. That section of highway was built across an old landslide, and ground movement could affect a highway stretch up to 500 feet in length or more.

We're not sure how Shelly came up with eight months before repairs are complete. The figure was contained in a press release from the Navajo Department of Transportation describing a meeting Sunday between Shelly, chapter officials and local residents. Presumably, NDOT had been in touch with ADOT, but ADOT said Wednesday it was still working to determine the extent of the ground shift, much less a repair plan and completion date.
