Kevin Washburn to host conference call on Cobell scholarships

Assistant Secretary Kevin Washburn, the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, is holding a conference call on Monday to discuss the scholarship fund that was created by the $3.4 billion Cobell trust fund settlement.

The scholarship fund will be overseen by a board of five members. The Interior Department is selecting two members and is still seeking nominations, according to a notice published in the Federal Register today.

Two additional members have already been selected by the Cobell plaintiffs. They are Turk Cobell, the son of the late Elouise Cobell, and Alex Pearl, a law professor who is a member of the Chickasaw Nation.

The fifth member will be selected by the American Indian College, the group that's been chosen to administer the scholarship fund.

Monday's conference call takes place at 3pm Eastern time, according to the Federal Register notice.
