South Dakota governor cites improved relationships with tribes

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R) says he has worked to improve relationships with the state's tribes.

Daugaard told The Mitchell Daily Republic that he has met with each of the nine tribes at least once since taking office. He has invited some tribal leaders to the governor's mansion.

Daugaard has faced criticism over the state's handling of Indian Child Welfare Act cases. The Republic didn't say if he discussed the issue.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, along with three Indian parents, are suing the state due to alleged violations of ICWA.

Daugaard previously served as CEO of the Children’s Home Society, which has received contracts from the state to handle child welfare cases.
